The Jewish holiday of Purim (also known as the Festival of Lots) is celebrated one month before Passover. It commemorates the successful overthrow of a plot to destroy the Jews of ancient Persia. Its establishment as a festival of joy and gladness is recounted in the Book of Esther, the scroll that is read on Purim. On the festival people come to Temple (often dressed wearing costumes and masks) and use their noisemakers to drown out the name of the evil Haman, whose name appears more than fifty times in the Book. I am Purim explores the origins of the Purim holiday and the spiritual traits that it embodies.
