The Ten Commandments cover the whole religious and moral life. They are primarily contained in Exodus 20:2-17 and reappear in the Book of Deuteronomy 5:6-21, where the Sabbath is based upon the deliverance from Egypt, instead of God’s resting on the seventh day from the work of creation. Centuries ago, the Ten Commandments were recited in the Jerusalem Temple as part of the daily service. The story of the Ten Commandments is traditionally read in synagogues on the major festival of Shavuot—the Festival of Weeks. Plants and flowers, reminiscent of the slopes of Mount Sinai, decorate the synagogue.
