Why Your Book Order Might Take Longer Than Expected
A behind-the-scenes look at small press publishing
At Higher Ground Books & Media, we believe in being honest about how things work—even when it’s a little more complicated than expected.
From time to time, we hear from customers or authors who are frustrated that their book order didn’t arrive as quickly as they expected. And we understand that. When you’re excited about a book—especially your own—you want it in your hands now, not weeks from now.
So we want to take a moment to explain what’s happening behind the scenes.
We Don’t Operate Like Amazon—Even Though We Work with Them
While our books are printed and fulfilled through Amazon’s KDP platform, we don’t have the same privileges as a typical Amazon customer.
Even if we personally have Amazon Prime, those benefits do not apply when we place orders through the publisher dashboard.
That means:
We don’t receive free shipping
We can’t access Prime delivery speeds
We don’t have the option to expedite shipping on discounted orders
The Trade-Off: Lower Cost vs. Faster Delivery
When authors order copies through us, we use a special publisher/author discount to keep costs as low as possible.
That discount matters. It’s what allows us to offer:
Reduced pricing for author copies
Bulk ordering options
More accessible publishing for our authors
But here’s the trade-off:
👉 Discounted orders are processed through a different system—and they move slower.
For example:
An order placed through our publisher account may show a delivery window of 2–3 weeks
The same book ordered directly through Amazon as a retail customer may arrive in 2–3 days
Same book. Same printer. Completely different processing pipeline.
Why This Trade-Off Matters More Than You Think
There’s another layer to this that most people don’t see.
Faster shipping doesn’t just change delivery time—it changes the economics of the book.
When we bypass publisher pricing to get faster delivery, the cost per book goes up --- and author earnings go down.
For many independent authors, royalties average around $2 per book (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less).
That means:
A year (or more) of writing, editing, revising, and publishing…
All for about $2 per sale—if the book sells at all.
So, when we choose slower, discounted fulfillment for bulk and author orders, it’s not just about cost—it’s about protecting what little margin authors actually have.
It’s one of the strategies we use to keep publishing sustainable for the people doing the work.
Why We Keep Our Prices as Low as Possible
There’s one more piece to this that matters.
We work very hard to keep the cost of our books as low as possible—for both our authors and our readers.
We know that while many people love to read, buying books isn’t always a priority. Pricing matters.
Amazon sets a minimum price for every book, and we aim to stay as close to that minimum as we can—without eliminating the royalties our authors earn.
For example, if a book must be priced at $12 or higher, you’ll often see it listed at $12.99 or $13.99—not $16.99 or $18.99.
That’s intentional.
It’s part of our commitment to keeping books accessible while still allowing authors to earn something for their work.
Because the reality is this:
Even at those prices, author royalties are modest. And the portion that comes back to the publisher is used to support editing, production, and the ongoing work it takes to keep books in print.
We’re not inflating prices to maximize profit.
We’re working to keep a balance—so books can reach people and authors can still be supported. Because a book can’t make an impact if no one can afford to pick it up.
That same commitment to keeping costs low is also why our shipping works differently.
When we use discounted publisher ordering, we’re able to keep prices more accessible—but those orders move through a slower production and fulfillment process.
Choosing faster shipping would mean higher per-book costs, especially on larger orders—and those costs don’t just disappear. They get passed along.
So for bulk and author orders, we’ve intentionally chosen to prioritize affordability over speed.
What This Means for You
If timing is important, here are the best ways to plan:
Order early whenever possible, especially around events or holidays
If you need a book quickly, consider ordering directly through Amazon for faster delivery
Use our shop when cost savings matter more than speed
We’re Always Balancing What Matters Most
As a small, independent publisher, we’re constantly balancing three things:
Cost
Quality
Turnaround time
We don’t have the same infrastructure as large publishers or direct retail systems—but what we do have is a commitment to serving our authors well and keeping publishing accessible.
That sometimes means things take a little longer.
And we believe it’s worth it--for our authors and for the stories they're here to tell.
