Rabbi Ron Isaacs Chronicles Hockey Pioneer Alex Levinsky in That’s Mein Boy
SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — Rabbi and author Ron Isaacs brings a remarkable family story to life in his new book, That’s Mein Boy: The Alex Levinsky Story, published through Higher Ground Books & Media’s L’Chayim Library imprint.
Growing up in Toronto, Isaacs was surrounded by hockey. His childhood home was near Maple Leaf Gardens, several of his high school teachers were professional hockey players, and he spent Saturday evenings watching the Toronto Maple Leafs. He dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player.
At the same time, Isaacs grew up hearing family stories about Alex Levinsky, a Jewish American-born NHL player who proudly wore his Judaism throughout his career and played on two Stanley Cup-winning teams. According to family lore, Levinsky was part of Isaacs’s family tree.
The connection between the two men is particularly remarkable: Levinsky dreamed of becoming a rabbi and became a professional hockey player, while Isaacs dreamed of playing professional hockey and became a rabbi.
That’s Mein Boy is Isaacs’s tribute to Levinsky’s extraordinary life, athletic accomplishments, Jewish identity, and the family story that kept his memory alive across generations.
