As a pet owner of both dogs and parakeets, I have always been appreciative of the Bible's concern for animals. Within the Ten Commandments is featured the commandment to rest one's animals on the Sabbath day. There is also a biblical prohibition of yoking two animals of unequal strength together. In Judaism there is also a rabbinic obligation to feed one's pet before one has one's own meal. Compassion to animals is at the top of God's list of important obligations. This story makes for a great discussion of the importance of taking care of a bird who gets stuck and seeing it to freedom.
