Research has shown that music can have a large influence on cognitive and emotional well-being. Music listeners have been shown to have higher scores for mental well-being and slightly reduced levels of anxiety and depression compared to people overall. This author has used his guitar skills for his music therapy sessions with hospice patients. The brain responds to music in a very specific way as can be attested to in the story of the Power of Song. In this true story, the author's cousin suffers a stroke and loses his ability to communicate. Singing songs and sentences to him allows him to once again begin to communicate, only this time in song.
