One of the highlights of the Jewish New Year, known as Rosh Hashanah is listening to the sounds of the shofar (ram’s horn). It is blown in the synagogue one hundred times on each of the two days of the Jewish New Year. The purpose of the sounding of the ram’s horn is to motivate the worshippers to repent of all of their mistakes. The specific notes of the shofar are an unbroken sound (tekiah), a wailing sound broken into three parts (shevarim) and a sobbing broken sound into nine parts, called teruah. The author got the idea for this story at a Rosh Hashanah service at Beth Judah in Wildwood, where he serves as spiritual leader. It was the Rosh Hashanah during COVID when sounding the shofar inside the sanctuary was not recommended. This was the year of the hum hum hum when congregants produced the sounds.
