The character named Elijah in the Bible bears no relationship to the Elijah of Jewish folklore. The legendary Elijah visits every Passover seder where he will find a special cup of wine prepared for him. He also attends every Jewish circumcision. In the Bible there is no prophet more qualified to perform miracles. Among his wondrous acts are multiplying food and bringing the dead back to life. The Bible also suggests that Elijah does not die. He is walking with his disciple Elisha, when he suddenly ascends heavenward in a chariot of fire. (II Kings 2:11). This intimation of immortality is itself sufficient for Elijah's postmortem return visits to earth.
