Paul's Epistle to the Colossians (the new Christians who lived in the small city of Colossae in today's Turkey) was a persuasive pastoral letter reminding them that all they ever need is Jesus. They were forever attempting to add on to their essential faith: Jesus plus this or Jesus plus that. The Apostle Paul declared, "No, it's not Jesus plus anything else. It's just Jesus." Human nature doesn't seem to change, and 2,000 years later we are still searching for effective add-ons. In my nearly 90 years of living, I have found myself making that same mistake. I turn to Jesus to fill my emptiness, loneliness, lostness; but then I search for some sort of add-on that will permit me to retain control of my life. St. Paul reminds us that it's not Jesus plus. It's Jesus only.
