When the Seasons Change: Making Room for What Comes Next

What Are We Carrying Forward?
We all carry things from one season into the next: memories, relationships, lessons learned and sometimes burdens we've held for far too long.
Not everything needs to come with us.
Perhaps there are expectations we need to release, obligations we need to reconsider, or old habits that no longer serve us well. Letting go doesn't mean something never mattered. It means recognizing that our lives change, and sometimes we need to make room for something new.
Faith doesn't require us to understand every change before we move forward. We can grieve what we've lost, acknowledge our uncertainty, and still trust God to guide our next steps.
As Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, there is a season for everything and a time for every purpose under heaven.
We may not understand the season we're in, but we can continue seeking God in the middle of it.
Preparing for the Holidays
Before long, we'll be making plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas. For some, that means joyful gatherings and cherished traditions. For others, the holidays bring financial stress, complicated family relationships, or the ache of missing someone who is no longer here.
Often, we put pressure on ourselves to make everything perfect. We try to maintain every tradition, meet everyone's expectations, and create the kind of celebration we think we're supposed to have.
But what if we approached the holidays differently this year?
What if we focused less on what we feel obligated to do and more on what truly matters?
Maybe that means simplifying a meal, starting a new tradition, setting a necessary boundary, or spending more time with someone we love. Maybe it means acknowledging that this year will be different—and allowing ourselves to feel whatever comes with that.
We can be grateful for what we have while still grieving what we've lost. We can celebrate without pretending everything is perfect.
The most meaningful moments rarely depend on getting every detail right.
Making Room for What Comes Next
The changing leaves remind us that life doesn't stand still. Seasons end, new ones begin, and we learn to adjust along the way.
As we approach the end of another year, take a moment to consider where you are. What are you grateful for? What might you need to release? Is there something important you've been neglecting, or an opportunity you feel called to explore?
You don't have to answer every question today. You don't need a perfect plan for the months ahead.
Sometimes, growing in faith means taking the next step even when we can't see the entire path. It means trusting God through uncertainty, extending grace to ourselves and others, and remaining open to what may come.
The leaves will fall, winter will arrive, and eventually, new growth will appear. Our lives may not follow such a predictable pattern, but we can still move forward with hope.
As the seasons change, may we have the wisdom to release what we need to leave behind, the courage to embrace what lies ahead, and the faith to trust God along the way.
