The Father Who Never Leaves

Father’s Day brings different emotions for different people. Some have warm, loving memories of fathers who were there for them no matter what. Some have intrusive recollections of abuse doled out at the hands of broken fathers. And others have no feeling at all—whether because their father was absent or unknown or because their experience with him was unstable or unpredictable. For some, this day can be very painful or anxiety-provoking. For others, simply confusing. Sadly, I know only a handful of people whose relationship with their earthly father was actually good. There are so many for whom the memories of their fathers include abuse or neglect—if they have any recollection of their father at all.

The thing is, earthly fathers are imperfect. As we all are. We must understand that even if we feel that our earthly father has somehow failed us, we need to remember that God is not limited by those experiences. He is still God and He is still our Father. No matter what the circumstance, He gives His love to us freely and perfectly. Sometimes our experiences with earthly fathers limit our ability to accept the free and perfect love of our true Father. This is a hurdle that we must clear if we are to heal the brokenness caused by what our earthly fathers are sometimes not able to provide. Remember, that man is broken, too.

As Father’s Day approaches, we honor the fathers who loved, sacrificed, and guided us…even when they weren’t quite sure where to go themselves. We also remember the One who remains faithful through every season of life.

The Father who never leaves.

The Father who never forgets.

The Father whose love never fails.

No matter what your experience with Father's Day may be this year, remember that you are seen, known, and loved by the One who calls you His own.
